The Desert Cottontail (Sylvilagus audubonii), also called Audubon’s Cottontail, is a member of the family Leporidae. This species typically forages in the morning and in the early evening. It spends much of the day in its burrow to stay cool and to avoid predators; many desert animals are predators of the Desert Cottontail. While grass is the preferred diet of this herbivore, it also eats bark, leaves, and fruit. The Desert Cottontail measures about 16 inches in length and about 2 pounds in weight. It is found in the western United States and in Mexico. Threats to the survival of Desert Cottontail include animal predators, loss of habitat to land development, and legal game hunting in the United States; the Desert Cottontail is described by the IUCN Red List as of ‘least concern”.
